NEW WARNING
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified health care professionals about four published studies that suggest an increased risk of cancer in those diabetic patients receiving treatment with insulin glargine (Lantus). Based on recent data, the FDA advises patients to continue therapy with the drug until consulting with their health care provider because abruptly stopping the drug may cause elevated blood glucose levels that can have serious immediate and long-term effects.
The FDA is continuing to review safety data to better understand the risk of cancer that may be associated with insulin glargine. The FDA and the drug's manufacturer are discussing whether additional studies are necessary to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of this drug. The FDA encourages patients and health care providers to report adverse effects of insulin glargine to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program.
