NSAIDs and Breast Cancer
A meta-analysis published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute has found that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Researchers looked at studies published from January 1966 through July 2008 that examined the association between breast cancer and NSAIDs, including aspirin and ibuprofen.
The 38 applicable studies included more than 2.5 million patients. Meta-analysis found the relative risk of breast cancer to be 0.88 when linked with NSAID use (specifically, 0.87 for aspirin and 0.79 for ibuprofen). The researchers concluded that NSAID use may reduce the risk of breast cancer, and they suggested that future research evaluate the biologic mechanisms of the link between NSAIDs and breast cancer.
