Tussionex Safety

Responding to reports of life-threatening adverse events, including fatal respiratory depression, the Food and Drug Administration is highlighting how to safely use Tussionex Pennkinetic Extended-Release Suspension. Most important are these instructions:

  • Don't give Tussionex to children younger than age 6.
  • Stress to patients that Tussionex can't be taken more than once every 12 hours.
  • Teach patients how to measure the correct dose, and make sure they use a calibrated measuring device.
A long-acting antitussive–antihistamine, each teaspoon (5 ml) of Tussionex contains hydrocodone polistirex (equivalent to 10 mg of hydrocodone bitartrate) and chlorpheniramine polistirex (equivalent to 8 mg of chlorpheniramine maleate). Tussionex is indicated for relief of cough and upper respiratory symptoms from allergy or cold in adults and children age 6 and older. Each dose provides up to 12 hours of cough relief.
