Taking bepotastine besilate (Bepreve)

Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed bepotastine besilate to treat the itching and redness caused by your allergies. This drug blocks the release of histamine, a substance that causes the allergic reaction affecting your eyes. The brand name of this drug is Bepreve.

How you'll take bepotastine besilate
Instill one drop into your affected eye twice a day.

What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, instill the drug as soon as you remember. If it's almost time from the next dose, just skip the missed dose. Don't try to make up doses. Don't take more than two doses per day.

What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication.
Common: mild taste.
Less common: eye irritation, headache, nose or throat irritation.

What you must know about other medications
This medication doesn't interact with other medications you may be taking.

Special directions

  • Don't use this drug to treat irritation caused by contact lenses.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination of the drug.
  • Remove contact lenses before instilling the drug; lenses may be reinserted 10 minutes after instilling the drug.
  • Don't wear contact lenses if your eye is red.

Keep in mind

  • It isn't known how this drug could affect an unborn baby. Consult with your health care provider if you're pregnant.
  • It isn't known if this drug appears in breast milk. Consult with your health care provider to see whether you should continue breast-feeding or use another method of feeding the baby.
