Taking levocetirizine dihydrochloride (Xyzal)
Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed levocetirizine dihydrochloride, an antihistamine, for the treatment of your allergy symptoms or chronic hives. This medication blocks the effects of histamine and should decrease your signs and symptoms. The brand name of this medication is Xyzal.
How you'll take Xyzal
You’ll take one Xyzal tablet each day in the evening.
What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, don't double up doses. Take the tablet as soon as you remember and then start your usual routine the following day. Don't take more than one tablet each day.
What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication.
Common: sleepiness, fatigue, runny nose.
Less common: cough, fever, dry mouth.
What you must know about other medications
Combining this medication with alcohol or other medications that depress your nervous system may affect your mental alertness; avoid these combinations. Tell all of your health care providers that you're using this medication.
Special directions
- Take this medication every day in the evening.
- Don't drive a car, operate dangerous machinery, or engage in any activity that requires mental alertness while you're taking this medication.
- Don't take more than the prescribed dose in any given day.
- Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.
Keep in mind
- It isn't known if this medication can affect an unborn baby. If you're pregnant or would like to become pregnant, consult your health care provider.
- This medication could affect a baby. If you're breast-feeding, choose another method of feeding your baby while you're taking this medication.
- Don't drink alcohol while you're taking this medication; the effects on mental alertness could become more severe.
- Report difficulty breathing, nosebleeds, marked changes in mental functioning.
