Using doripenem (Doribax)
Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed doripenem, an antibiotic, to treat your complicated infection. This medication stops the bacteria from making a cell wall, leading to the death of the bacteria. The brand name of this medication is Doribax.
How you'll receive doripenem
This medication must be given by I.V. infusion over 1 hour every 8 hours for 5 to 14 days, depending on your infection and your response to the medication.
What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, consult your health care provider immediately. It's important to complete the full course of therapy.
What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication.
Common: headache, nausea, diarrhea, rash.
Less common: inflammation at injection site.
What you must know about other medications
This medication may cause changes in valproic acid levels. If you're taking valproic acid to control seizures, doripenem may interfere with that control and cause seizures. You shouldn't take this medication if you are also taking probenecid.
